How did you discover streetlifting?
I discovered the discipline while training at Fitness Park Villepinte – well, Aerovile, excuse me. That’s where I met Nico, the founder of SWAT. Over time, they noticed I was doing a lot of pull-ups and that I wasn’t too bad at it. I was doing a few muscle ups too. So they started to initiate me a bit into being stricter with the movement. Then I competed alongside them for the first time, and once you get a taste for it, you’re hooked.
Why did you decide to compete at FNSL IDF Centre?
Well, the federation is getting more and more organized now, so you have to go through this step – the regional (Ile-de-France) qualifiers – to be eligible for the national championship. So that’s now done. And the real battles are just beginning. I’m going to have to fight hard to try and reach the world championships at the end of the year.
The weighted muscle ups – were they easy or mission impossible?
Honestly, I’ve been feeling really good in training lately. Last week I missed 35kg. So I was a bit frustrated, but I know I always have a bonus in competition – the adrenaline always pushes you that much further. So here I ended up hitting 43kg, which is one of my best competition performances – even though they didn’t white-light it. It reassures me going forward. I’ve got 12 weeks left to perform at the French national championship.
Did you hit your weighted pull-up attempts, or did you leave something on the table?
No, I couldn’t have gone any heavier today – it was really my absolute max. I had thought about going for 2 reps at 120kg, because honestly my first opener was already enough to qualify. But today that just wasn’t going to happen. It’s one of my next goals though, so we’ll see at the end of my next prep cycle. On the pull, I simply had nothing more today.
And on the weighted dips?
For both the weighted pull-ups and the weighted dips, I only took 2 attempts, because when I feel I don’t have more, or that it’s going to be too difficult – and since the goal today was just to qualify – I’d rather save some energy, given that I’m back in training tomorrow. So hitting 150kg on that event, I was still happy to get it. Across all 4 movements, that’s something I hadn’t done yet. So let’s say it’s a milestone crossed, and the next one is 160kg on all 4 movements, God willing.
And with all that accumulated fatigue, how did you feel on the squats?
Well, I’ve been training at such high volumes for years that honestly, a competition like this is basically a rest day for me. That means general fatigue is not something that’s going to hurt me. So when I get to the squat, it’s a different movement, so of course the feelings are different. It becomes a kind of gauge telling me whether I’m in shape or not – and whether I’ve done the pull-ups and weighted dips beforehand makes no difference. So in terms of building up, it was a bit tricky.
I did what – 150kg, 160kg? Let’s just say the lower weights weren’t flying up. So I put in 200kg to build confidence going onto the platform, and from there it moved better. Right now I’m really making an effort to maintain good technique and degrade as little as possible. Naturally, when I don’t break form, the weights go up more slowly but they go up better, so I prefer it that way. Then I went to 220kg, because for me that’s starting to become the bare minimum on squat to say I’m at a certain level. Now I’ve got 12 weeks to chase the weight I want – at least 250kg, maybe more. But I think it’ll be 250kg for the French nationals, God willing.
And if you had to sum up your competition in one word?
Good competition, good return to competing across all 4 movements – so I’m happy. And now I need to do better. No choice. No choice.
