The best lifting belts stand out by their thickness, the quality of the leather, their closure system and their certifications. For competition, go for the 13 mm standard in full-grain leather, with a reliable lever and recognized approval.

To get started, a split-leather lever belt is more than enough and lets you work on intra-abdominal pressure without overspending. The right choice therefore depends on your level, your loads and your budget.

Definition

What is a lifting belt?

A lifting belt (or powerlifting belt) is a rigid belt, usually made of thick leather with a lever or buckle closure, worn around the waist. By pushing your abdomen against the belt, you increase intra-abdominal pressure, which stabilizes the spine and makes heavy movements safer:

  • The weighted squat
  • The deadlift
  • The heavy lifts of streetlifting and powerlifting

Unlike a dip belt (which adds load), a lifting belt carries no weight: it supports the torso and lets you lift heavier, more safely. It’s the go-to accessory as soon as the loads become maximal.

Buying guide

How to choose your lifting belt

The 6 essential criteria to check before buying, based on your level.

01
Thickness

13 mm is the competition standard: maximum stability under heavy loads. 10 mm for a bit more flexibility.

02
Material

Full-grain leather is the most durable. Split leather works for a tight budget.

03
Closure system

Lever: fast, reliable tightening, ideal in competition. Prong buckle: more adjustable but slower.

04
Size and fit

Measure your waist. The belt should be tight without blocking your breathing.

05
Certifications

Check IPF / FNSL compliance if you plan to compete — some federations require it.

06
Budget

From 65€ to 284€ depending on the range. For durability, 200-260€ is the sweet spot.

Use it right

How to use a lifting belt

4 steps for safe, effective lower-back support.

01
Position the belt

Place it around your waist, just above the hips, so that it rests comfortably over the lower back.

02
Tighten correctly

Tighten enough to provide support without restricting your breathing. You should be able to push your abdomen against the belt.

03
Build intra-abdominal pressure

Breathe in deeply, brace your belly against the belt to stabilize the spine before every heavy rep.

04
Adjust between sets

Loosen it between heavy sets to aid recovery and blood circulation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions to help you choose the right lifting belt.

Why use a lifting belt?
Lifting belts provide essential support to the lower back, improving stability and reducing the risk of injury. They optimize intra-abdominal pressure for better performance on the squat and heavy lifts.
Is it normal if the belt hurts?
Pressure is normal, but pain is not. If it hurts, check the size and positioning. It should support without causing excessive discomfort. If problems persist, consult a professional.
How do you care for a lifting belt?
Clean after each use with a damp cloth. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. For leather, apply a conditioner periodically. Check the stitching and buckle regularly for wear.
